Technological Iteration Accelerates: Machine Tool Bed Innovation Consolidates Precision Foundation of High-End Equipment
2026-05-29
As the core load-bearing component of CNC machine tools, the machine tool bed bears all loads of key components including spindles, guide rails and tool changers, serving as a core carrier for ensuring structural rigidity, operational stability and machining accuracy. It is widely regarded as the "core framework" of industrial mother machines. With the rapid upgrading of China’s high-end manufacturing industry, fields such as aerospace, precision molds and new energy components have put forward increasingly stringent requirements for machine tool accuracy, stability and durability, pushing machining processes toward submicron ultra-precision machining and high-speed dynamic cutting. Against this backdrop, the structural and technical shortcomings of traditional beds have become prominent. Leading domestic machine tool enterprises continue to deepen innovations in material improvement, structural optimization and process upgrading, accelerate the technological iteration of machine tool beds, comprehensively enhance the basic performance of domestic CNC machine tools, and advance the localization of high-end machine tools.
HT300 gray cast iron has long been the mainstream material for the beds of medium and small-sized CNC machine tools due to its moderate strength, excellent castability and controllable cost, which is suitable for most conventional machining scenarios. Nevertheless, this traditional process has obvious limitations. Castings suffer from large residual stress and limited damping and vibration reduction performance. Long-term high-speed and heavy-load operation tends to cause micro-deformation and machining chatter of the bed, directly leading to workpiece accuracy deviation and unqualified Surface Roughness, making it difficult to meet the long-term stability requirements of high-end precision machining. To address this pain point, domestic machine tool manufacturers have achieved iterative upgrading of HT300 casting technology. Adopting full-process precision temperature-controlled casting, layered pouring, and composite treatment of multiple artificial aging and natural aging, the new process effectively releases the internal residual stress of castings, greatly improving the overall structural rigidity and long-term dimensional stability of the bed and avoiding deformation during long-term service. At present, the optimized process has achieved large-scale mass production and is widely applied to main models such as vertical machining centers and CNC lathes, gaining favorable market feedback.
In the high-end machine tool sector, new composite-structure beds have become a key trend in industrial R&D and application. Different from traditional integrated cast iron beds, composite beds with welded steel plate frames and polymer damping perfusion achieve a perfect balance of light weight, high rigidity and superior vibration reduction. Their damping performance far exceeds that of traditional cast iron, which can effectively offset vibration interference generated by high-speed cutting and high-frequency feeding, eliminate chatter marks and accuracy deviations in precision machining, and perfectly adapt to high-end scenarios including five-axis linkage machining, ultra-precision grinding and special-shaped part finishing. In addition, new non-metallic bed materials such as cast stone and high-density artificial marble have been gradually applied. Featuring low thermal expansion coefficient, minimal internal stress, corrosion resistance and excellent shock resistance, these materials significantly improve the accuracy consistency of machine tools under high and low temperatures and complex working conditions, making them the preferred choice for ultra-precision machine tools.
Industry experts state that the competition in machine tool accuracy essentially lies in the stability of basic components. As the foundation of machine tools, the bed determines the upper limit of overall accuracy and service life of the equipment, acting as a crucial link in the localization breakthrough of high-end machine tools. China’s machine tool industry is currently breaking away from low-end homogeneous competition and transforming toward high-end precision manufacturing. Continuous technological breakthroughs in basic bed technologies provide core support for the upgrading of overall machine tool performance. In the future, the industry will further focus on three major upgrading directions: structural modularization, material compounding and process refinement. It will continuously optimize the mechanical structure and adaptive performance of machine tool beds, overcome core bottlenecks in the stability and durability of precision machine tools, and supply high-precision and high-reliability domestic industrial mother machines for high-end manufacturing fields including aerospace, new energy, high-end molds and precision instruments, thereby supporting the independent and controllable development of the high-end equipment industry.
