Technological Progress and Optimization of CNC Crankshaft Precision Machining
2026-05-26
As a core load-bearing component of the power systems for internal combustion engines and engineering machinery, the crankshaft is also a typical complex part processed with high precision by CNC machine tools. Its machining accuracy and structural strength directly determine the operational stability and service life of power equipment. Compared with traditional processing technologies, CNC machining has become the core method for large-scale and high-precision production of crankshafts by virtue of its high precision and great flexibility.
The crankshaft features a complex structure consisting of main journals, connecting rod journals, crank arms and other special-shaped structures, which imposes extremely high requirements on its dimensional accuracy, coaxiality and Surface Roughness. Relying on CNC lathes, CNC external milling machines, special crankshaft grinders and other equipment, CNC machining realizes automatic processing through preset programming. Among the technologies, high-speed external milling can complete the rough machining of journals and shaft shoulders in a single process, replacing multiple traditional turning procedures. With a cutting speed of up to 350m/min, it greatly improves processing efficiency and effectively avoids dimensional deviations caused by manual operation.
The core advantages of CNC crankshaft machining lie in controllable accuracy and stable processing performance. The multi-axis linkage CNC system can accurately match the eccentric rotation trajectory of the crankshaft and strictly control the roundness and cylindricity errors of shaft journals. Combined with precision CNC grinding finishing, it can limit the surface roughness of workpieces to an extremely low range, effectively improving the wear resistance and transmission stability of crankshafts. Meanwhile, the CNC process is applicable to various crankshaft materials such as ductile iron and alloy steel, and can switch processing parameters rapidly to adapt to products of different specifications, presenting remarkable flexible production advantages.
The thin-walled structure of crankshafts is prone to vibration and deformation during high-speed cutting, which affects machining accuracy. In the future, technologies such as damping vibration reduction and intelligent parameter optimization, together with automatic closed-loop detection systems, will be adopted to further improve machining accuracy and product yield, promoting the upgrading of CNC crankshaft machining towards high efficiency, high precision and intelligence.
